Some friends and I have started a round robin quilting project. It's been a fun experience for me as I am a new quilter. It's been a learning experiece at each border with the challenge of designing and sewing a particular border.

We set a few rules for this project. First, we all got several yards of a focus fabric. This fabric was to serve as the inspiration for the theme and the colors of the finished quilt. For the center we decided that a block 12-20 inches with any style we desired. I paper pieced a smaller block as my first paper pieced project.

Nancy:

For the first border all we needed to do was to frame the center. This is Nancy's quilt with my border added. Nancy pieced a checkerboard of black fabrics and then appliqued flowers cut from other pieces of fabric. Her focus fabric is just as colorful, reminding me of a jumble of abstract butterfly wings.

I took the quilt with me to visit my Mom. She took me to many quilt stores in the Salt Lake area so we could find the 'perfect' fabric. It was a sacrifice she was more than happy to make.

Clarinda:

This is Clarinda's square with the first border added by Nancy. I have to plan a pieced border to add to this. Clarinda has used batik fabric for her center block and so far no one has decided to add other types of fabric.

Her focus fabric is a batik with maple leaves.

Some ideas I have about borders to add.

First ideas which got revised.

Kerri:

The rules for this border are that it must be a challenge. I'm not quite sure what I will do here since all the other borders have been challenging to me also. Without seeing what Clarinda and Nancy have done I'm guessing that I will be appliquing for this border. It's a new process for me and will certainly be a challenge. The other option is something with curves.

Laura

The final round requires the use of the focus fabric. I believe I will have Nancy's quilt back for this round. I think it will be very interesting to do both the first and last border on the quilt.
